All About Peterborough’s Stunning Green Spaces

Ask any new resident what they notice most about Peterborough, and the answer frequently comes down to one thing. It’s the incredible scenic beauty! It may seem strange to talk about Peterborough’s network of more than 100 parks and trails as winter approaches. However, these green spaces are worth a visit any time of the year, not just in the warmer months. For winter enthusiasts, there’s nothing like the pristine, snow-covered fields and trails that stretch for miles around. With so much to see and enjoy, even staunch haters of cold weather can’t help but sing the praise of Peterborough’s outdoor spaces. Here are just a few of our favourite year-round natural paradises.

Del Crary Park

Del Crary Park has become a favourite destination for locals and newcomers alike. The park hosts many exciting events in the summer, including Peterborough Musicfest, Canada’s longest-running free concert series. With a covered stage, Del Crary Park is a fantastic venue for up-and-coming and established performers. The Crash Test Dummies, the Sheepdogs, and the Trews are just a few acts to take the stage in the last few years.

In the winter, the park freezes into a frozen wonderland, and is the perfect spot for children to run, sled, build a fort, or make angels in the snow. Autumn months bring a colourful display of leaves and nature, a picturesque and unforgettable view, especially when looking out over the waterfront. The events and natural beauty make Del Crary one of Peterborough’s top hotspots all year round.

Jackson Park

The creekside views, spectacular bridges, and tall trees you encounter at Jackson Park may make you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a fairy tale. In the summer, the sun peaks through the foliage, providing a peaceful balance of shade and warmth. It’s hard to describe the beauty of Jackson Park in the spring and summer. In the fall, there simply are no words. You’ll have to imagine the burst of colour as the leaves change, reflected in the shimmering water of the creek. Park benches are found throughout, where you can stop and relax while snapping a few pictures. Visit Jackson Park and see for yourself why it has become one of Peterborough’s must-visit attractions.

The verdict is in. Peterborough is the perfect growing city for families! Here are a few reasons why:

Beavermead Park

Who doesn’t love a sandy beach in the summertime? But there’s more to Beavermead Park than suntanning or splashing in the water. Sit on a bench and watch the sunset over the shores of Little Lake, or take a hike along the scenic trail. For little ones, there’s a playground to climb, run, and slide to their hearts’ content. A picnic pavilion provides shaded tables where you can rest and enjoy a packed lunch. If there’s too much fun for your family to enjoy in a single day, you can stay overnight at the campground! Winter lovers have no reason to feel left out, as the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing all season long.

Trent Wildlife Sanctuary Trails

If you have an hour or two to spare, the Trent Wildlife Sanctuary Trails are a fantastic way to spend time with your family and get some outdoor exercise. Choose from paths ranging from 1.9 to 3.7 km, the longest of which will take an average of 52 minutes to complete. Come out and enjoy the riverside views and boardwalk trails. As you explore, be sure to keep your eyes out for the old abandoned cars hidden within the woods. The path is equally beautiful in the winter, especially after some freshly fallen snow! Your four-legged friends are also welcome as long as they are on a leash.

Grab your hockey sticks to shoot the puck, or glide leisurely along the ice while enjoying the snow-covered scenery and trees in the background. The Peterborough Lift Lock isn’t just a winter paradise. Lock 21 has the honour of being the tallest hydraulic lift lock in the world, a sight that draws countless visitors all year long. It’s located in a scenic park setting, where you can stop for a picnic or even take a riverboat cruise. If you want to make a day of it, the shops, restaurants and cafes of downtown Peterborough are a short stroll away!

Millennium Park Fountain

This stunning waterfront park is located right in downtown Peterborough, a slice of natural paradise away from the city hustle and bustle. A picturesque butterfly garden, a waterfront trail, and endless flowers and sculptures are just a few attractions that will catch your eye. In the heart of it all, there’s a water fountain feature that is not to be missed. The park is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year. Washrooms are available during the spring and summer. If you need refreshments, the outdoor patio at Silver Bean Cafe is a great place to stop for coffee, sandwiches, or ice cream.
