Are you ready for some fun facts about Peterborough, Ontario? (Not to be confused with Peterborough, UK, way on the other side of the “pond.”) First up, we are often called “The Electric City” as one of the first places in Canada to use electric street lights. Innovation, thy name is “Peterborough!”
The gigantic Lift Lock is yet another claim to fame. This engineering marvel, which officially became operational in 1904, is still the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. As you can imagine, we Peterborough dwellers are pretty proud of this honour. But what is it like to actually live here on a day-to-day basis? As long-time residents, we know Peterborough is a good place to live, and we are uniquely qualified to answer this all-important question!

Nowhere Compares to Peterborough
Our own story begins and continues in Peterborough. It’s where Katie grew up, and we both moved back in 2018 to be closer to family and expand our real estate services. Today, we can’t imagine a better environment for our family. It’s hard to pinpoint precisely what we love so much because there are way too many benefits of living in Peterborough.
However, we have to start somewhere, so let’s talk about the green spaces. Ontario is famous for it, and Peterborough is among the most beautiful and scenic cities in the province. Gorgeous parks and trails are everywhere, and even the busiest streets are lined with trees and foliage. The neighbourhood homes themselves are a sight to admire with their meticulous gardens and landscaping.
Peterborough has far too many trails and parks to describe in a single paragraph. If you want to learn more, read All About Peterborough’s Stunning Green Spaces.
An Elevated Yet Affordable Lifestyle
Affordability is at the top of the list when it comes to loving life in Peterborough. If you’re planning to buy a house, you could get a spacious three or four-bedroom home for what you’d pay for a shoebox-sized condo in the GTA!
Every type of real estate option is more affordable in Peterborough, whether you’re looking at a modern estate in one of our most luxurious neighbourhoods or a starter condo to get your first foot on the property ladder. The cost of housing is by far the most significant savings you can look forward to. However, the benefits don’t stop here.
There are countless ways to enjoy a high quality of life while stretching your dollar further than ever. It could mean paying less for an elegant meal out while enjoying a night on the town. Alternatively, it could mean less pain at the gas pump or in the grocery store. In a world where every dime matters more than ever, every small chance to save adds up.

Small-Town Feel, Big-City Convenience
One of the best aspects of living in Peterborough is that you have all of the joys of big-city life with few of the drawbacks. Peterborough offers a vibrant arts and entertainment scene, along with a series of events that residents look forward to all year long.
Peterborough Musicfest is just one example. Canada’s longest-running free concert series features eight solid weeks of award-winning artists and bands! There is also an art crawl on the first Friday of every month, as well as a winter festival to warm your soul on the coldest days of the year.
Whatever the season, there’s something fun on the calendar! If you miss an event, there’s always live music, comedy shows, or theatre happening somewhere in the city, along with the chance to enjoy great food with your family and friends.
The Gateway to Cottage Country
Peterborough provides endless opportunities for a memorable “staycation.” A convenient location between the Otonobee River and the shores of Little Lake makes it feel like having a luxurious resort right in your own backyard. If you want to expand your horizons, your options are far from limited.
Peterborough is well known as the Gateway to the Kawarthas, where you’ll find some of Ontario’s best sparkling lakes and vacation destinations. Just think: while others are sitting in traffic for hours a day to get away for a long weekend, you can spend an afternoon in the sand and be home on time for supper. Alternatively, you might decide to stay and enjoy one of the many fabulous restaurants in the quaint towns of the Kawarthas. Come for the beach, stay for the food, and return for the breathtaking scenic beauty!

A Family-Friendly Environment
A warm and welcoming environment makes Peterborough a top choice for families of all shapes and sizes! Parents love the proximity to high-quality schools. Access to education does not end after high school graduation, either. Trent University is right in town, and it’s well-regarded as one of Canada’s best universities, which means no need to pack up and move miles away to pursue higher education.
When not in class, you’ll see families spending quality time together by hitting the hiking trails, knocking the pins down at a bowling alley, or getting some culture at a festival or museum. The list of fun and unique activities is unlimited!
