What and Where Is Lakefield, Ontario?

Though close to the City of Peterborough, Lakefield belongs to the Township of Selwyn and is one of seven townships that make up the Peterborough County area. Understanding the political and geographic makeup can be confusing. If you start to feel bogged down by the details, just remember that property taxes tend to be far lower once you venture outside of the major cities.

As you may expect, a town called “Lakefield” is surrounded by water! Katchewanooka Lake, Buckhorn Lake, Clear Lake, the Trent Severn Waterway, and the Otonabee River are on all sides of the community – Gateway to Cottage Country indeed!

Lakefield boasts a picturesque atmosphere no matter what season you visit. It’s hard to say when it’s most beautiful: in the summer when the grass and trees are green and vibrant or in the fall when the streets are filled with an explosion of colour. Then again, there’s something to be said for the glistening fields covered in pristine snow before the community comes roaring back to life with the scents and sights of spring.

A Place Where Memories Are Made

If there’s anyone who can tell you what Lakefield is all about, it’s our very own Katie Hadden. Katie moved to Lakefield at a young age and spent most of her childhood immersed in the charm of this scenic town. Her family lived on the beautiful grounds of the prestigious Lakefield College School, where her father served as the headmaster for many years.

Growing up in this tight-knit town meant days filled with biking the Lakefield Rotary Trail, taking in the beautiful scenery along the Otonabee River, and, of course, making regular stops at the Canoe & Paddle—where ice cream and refreshments were mandatory by law! Summer afternoons were often spent swimming, building sandcastles, and enjoying everything Lakefield’s waterfront lifestyle had to offer.

With Lakefield College School playing such a big role in her upbringing, Katie’s roots in the community run deep. For her, Lakefield isn’t just a vacation destination—it’s home.

What to Do in Lakefield

If you’re looking for peace and quiet while being surrounded by natural beauty, Lakefield will feel like it was put on the map just for you. However, make no mistake; there are also plenty of exciting adventures awaiting you here.

You are strategically located near many of Kawartha’s most beautiful lakes, after all. This opens up premium opportunities for thrill seekers of any age for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. Remember that giving a ‘thumbs up’ isn’t just a sign of approval – it’s how you tell your boat driver to go faster!

There’s a sandy beach right in town, so you don’t have to go far to splash and play. You’ll spot families happily basking at Lakefield Beach all season long, either swimming, boating, or fighting to see who can create the biggest splash with their cannonballs.

Stay Dry & Entertained

If you prefer some dry land excitement, you are also in luck. Lakefield is renowned for its incredible hiking and cycling trails. Some are relatively easy, like the Lakefield Rotary Trail. For more of a challenge, grab a water bottle (you’re going to need it) and head on over to Harold Town Conservation Area or Mark S. Burnham Provincial Park. Alternatively, you might take a short drive to spend an afternoon spelunking at the Warsaw Caves.

Whenever you crave a little retail therapy, you’ll find everything you need on the main shopping strip along Queen Street. The abundance of boutiques, clothing stores, gift shops, and incredible pubs and cafes will keep you busy without ever having to drive into Peterborough – unless you want to. Many of Lakefield’s restaurants offer an outdoor patio, allowing you to take in the scenery while you lounge. And, of course, you will also find the obligatory Foodland grocery store. This is a must-have amenity in all of the cottage country towns near Peterborough!
