Signs It’s Time to Move Away From the GTA

It’s hard to believe that the idea of life in a huge city once seemed so exciting. The lights were bright, the air was full of energy that was almost electric, and there was never a day when there wasn’t something new to see and experience. At that point, you couldn’t imagine living anywhere but in a hopping metropolis, perhaps one like the GTA.

Many people move to the city, never imagining that the experience will ever grow old. And yet, for many of us, it does. What are some of the signs it might be time to embrace something new and do what may have once been unthinkable? In this post, we’ll discuss when to consider moving away from the GTA. We’ll also talk about what is, in our unbiased opinion, one of the top places to live in Canada!

Searching for a new place to call home, with gorgeous surroundings, a supportive community, and a ton of fun activities to enjoy all year long? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Living in Peterborough!

The Glamour Is Gone

Life changes, sometimes drastically, and the very thing that made Toronto the world’s most “livable city” can be what eventually makes you want to move away. The lights that once seemed so bright start to sting your eyes. The “get and go” culture that was once exhilarating now feels overwhelming, and suddenly, all of the noise never seems to end.

There are more cars on the road than ever, with another magically appearing by the minute, which means bumper-to-bumper traffic everywhere, even during what is supposed to be “off-times.” Often, what should be a 15-minute drive turns into an hour. Getting anywhere is a giant hassle.

If you’ve ever sat behind the wheel and wanted to scream, it could be a sign that it’s time to explore new alternatives. There’s no way running an errand or two should be this stressful.

Public transit isn’t always better. Streetcars and subways can move faster through the rush hour – if you don’t mind the crowds. (Try not to think about all the germs and viruses you come in contact with while you’re crammed in like a sardine.)

If you can’t remember the last time you woke up, pulled open the curtains, and felt a rush of happiness about living here, it may be time for a change. Wherever you end up, there should be an undercurrent of joy and contentment. You owe it to yourself not to settle for anything less.

Does packing up and moving to a new city or a cute town in Ontario mean selling your home? The posts below can give you some valuable insights:

Your Needs Have Evolved

For every person who was originally attracted to the GTA for the excitement, someone else is there for more practical reasons. You may have moved to Toronto because that’s where the jobs are. Or, at least, that’s where they were.

It wasn’t that long ago that you had to be in a massive city if you wanted a chance at the best business or career opportunities. But as the surrounding towns and smaller cities have developed, they’ve become leaders in every type of industry, finance, technology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, education, and more.

So if you once moved to Toronto because you felt it gave you the best shot at your best life, you have no such limits anymore. Plus, the workplace landscape is changing. Some companies still offer remote and hybrid models, which expands your possibilities of where you could call home.

Life Has Gotten So Expensive

Rising costs have affected nearly everyone all across the globe. Nevertheless, residents in cities like Toronto tend to feel the pinch more than anyone.

Housing values have skyrocketed, as have rents and other costs of living. Toronto homeowners feel no relief when it comes to property taxes, either. Although the GTA may boast the lowest rates in terms of percentage, few people come out ahead when you consider the assessed value of a typical house in or near Toronto.

Moving away from the GTA can be good for the heart and soul if you’re ready for a little more tranquillity in your life. And there’s no denying it can be good for your financial health.

For those who have owned a Toronto house for a decade or more, selling now could leave you with a substantial profit. Relocate almost anywhere, and those dollars will suddenly start to stretch much further than you ever realized they could.

A Change Just Feels Right

You don’t necessarily need a tangible reason or a sign from the universe to tell you that it’s time for a new beginning. Often, the idea just feels right. If the thought of going through the process of moving fills you with excitement rather than dread, that could be an indication that a relocation is just what you need.

A fresh beginning in a smaller city or town could also align with a different chapter in your life. For example, if you’re recently retired, got married, or are growing your family, a peaceful, affordable location can help you make the most of your experience.

Life After the GTA?

Where should you go when you realize the GTA is no longer for you? There’s a whole world out there for you to explore, but chances are, your ideal spot isn’t far from where you are now.

Consider Peterborough, for example. Here, you have a vibrant city that is nowhere near as crowded, gridlocked, noisy, or expensive as Toronto. There are lots of fun things to do, every convenience and amenity imaginable, and a long list of exciting events and entertainment to look forward to.

If you really miss some aspects of your GTA life, you can just drive back for an afternoon or an evening. Often, you can get there in under two hours, or you can skip the stress and take the Go bus instead. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose, except your stress and possibly a few financial struggles!

Just imagine, life in Peterborough, where a 10-minute drive actually takes 10 minutes. And did we mention the parking? You can quickly and easily find a spot nearly anywhere you go; best of all, it’s free. For many people moving from the GTA, that alone is the game-changer.
