Becoming more active is a worthy goal for many people. For those of us fortunate enough to live in Peterborough, there are plenty of fun and engaging ways to stay fit and healthy that go far beyond sweating it out in a gym–although that is a perfectly viable option!
The sheer abundance of trails, parks, and walking paths make it easy to take your activities outdoors where you can bask in the sights and sounds of this beautiful city. In this post, we’ll brainstorm up some of the best and most creative ways to get your heart pumping.
A Bonanza of Fitness Centres
Hitting the gym may be one of the most obvious ways to get and stay fit. However, that doesn’t mean it has to ever feel tedious. Peterborough is home to several innovative centres that allow you to build strength, fine-tune your coordination, train the circuits, improve balance and stretch your flexibility to new limits! Here are a few of our local favourites:
- Orangetheory Fitness: We are absolutely not biased just because our very own Jeff and Katie are members here. Orangetheory has developed a scientifically backed formula to help people of all ages get into the best shape of their lives with as little struggle or wasted effort as possible. With your heart rate in the “orange level,” you’ll begin to boost your metabolism, burn fat, and most importantly–see results.
- The Willow Studio: Building strength, balance, and flexibility shouldn’t have to hurt, and The Willow Studio has the program to prove it. This meticulously clean studio has a routine for you, whether you’re a complete novice or a seasoned yoga and pilates master.
- Hinge Strength and Conditioning: Do you want to strengthen your body’s potential while forming a deeper connection to a like-minded community? The dedicated coaches at Hinge aren’t just about muscle; they also care passionately about helping you achieve a happier and healthier lifestyle. Both group classes and private training are available.

Recreational and Community Centres Galore
If you prefer a less formal way to stay active, you’re in luck when you live in Peterborough. You’ll find multiple recreational and community centres dispersed throughout the city where you can pop by for a swim at an indoor pool or participate in a drop-in basketball game.
Here are just a few places where you can meet new friends as you get into your daily activity:
- Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre: With an aquatic facility, indoor walking track, and three gymnasiums offering a range of activities, there is always something on the calendar at Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre.
- Healthy Planet Arena: Nothing motivates people to get active more than having fun while doing it! And what could be more exciting than whizzing around on the ice at the Healthy Planet Arena? This state-of-the-art facility features two ice rinks and enough space to accommodate up to 160 skaters.
- Mapleridge Recreation Centre: If weights and aerobics aren’t your thing, adults over the age of 50 can always get their cardio in through a Zumba or Line Dancing class. Alternatively, you could try your hand at the Pickle Ball Court. Mapleridge Recreation Centre is also a great place to focus your mind through exercises in Qigong or Tai Chi.

Bask in the Great Outdoors
The nice thing about getting active in the great outdoors is that nature is always open, including on weekends and statutory holidays. Just grab your shoes and weather-appropriate outerwear and the day is set!
With fantastic parks and beautiful green spaces, Peterborough makes it easy to want to get out and explore. Stunning hiking and multi-use paths make this a city for walking, hiking, or jogging.
Many parks feature expansive soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and basketball courts for those who want to participate in organized sports. Alternatively, you can enjoy a friendly game of beach volleyball when the warm weather arrives.
The downtown core is close to the waterfront, which provides a scenic backdrop to your power walks (or “power shops” as may be the case – you’ll also discover superb boutiques and shopping malls on your travels.)
Multiple bike lanes make Peterborough one of Ontario’s most cycling-friendly cities. If you’d rather stay off the roads, there are over 80 km of trails currently available, with many more on the way. This is an incredible way to get some exercise and bond with friends or family as you explore all that Peterborough has to offer.
