This statement might ruffle some feathers of our friends in the GTA, but Peterborough’s vibrant entertainment scene really does rival that of Toronto. We’re not afraid to make such a bold statement because we know Peterborough, and this is a claim we can back up easily. Just think of the festivals, the music, the shows, and more. When you consider all of the unique, one-of-a-kind events combined with our highly anticipated annual traditions, it’s hard not to get excited about visiting or living in Peterborough. In this post, our friendly and light-hearted rivalry with Toronto continues with yet another side-by-side comparison.

Peterborough Is a City of Festivals

Toronto might draw thousands of tourists to its famous events, but it has nothing on Peterborough. “Festival City” is not our official nickname, but it might as well be! The city calendar is jam-packed with back-to-back festivals and events all year long, especially in the spring and summertime. When you get an idea of what’s going on, you will wish you could clone yourself so you could experience it all. Every year, there are countless one-off festivals to attend. And, of course, many of our favourite events are perennial occurrences. That means the fun can continue, and the memories can last a lifetime. Here are just a few family-friendly events to watch out for:

  • Dragon Boat Festival: Grab your oars, and row, row, row! The winning team earns bragging rights, and trophies may be involved! Best of all, proceeds support the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation (PRHC Foundation). If boat racing is not your thing, feel free to cheer from the shore while enjoying a delectable snack from the many food vendors sponsoring the event.
  • The Canada Day Parade: Peterborough residents love Canada, and we don’t hesitate to show it. Pre-parade festivities kick off early in the morning, featuring events like bike races, face painting, and speeches by dignitaries. Bring your appetite because the birthday cake is to die for. The evening will end with a fantastic display of fireworks.
  • Peterborough Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade: It’s impossible to talk about fun events in Peterborough without mentioning the Santa Claus Parade. And it isn’t just youngsters whose eyes light up with wonder and joy when the man in red comes to town! Hundreds of people of all ages line the streets to dance and celebrate the magic of the season.

Does Toronto Have Anything Over Peterborough?

As you can see, the streets of Peterborough are alive with excitement and entertainment on every corner. And it isn’t just when highly anticipated festivals roll into town, either. You’ll find live music, plays, movies, and more to enjoy whenever you have a spare moment to yourself. It’s almost like living amidst the bustle of the GTA but with a few key differences.

It turns out that Toronto does offer some things you’ll be hard-pressed to find in Peterborough. For example, cramped, crowded spaces where you can’t move for the wall of people are rare, even during the busiest Peterborough events. The other thing conspicuously absent in Peterborough is the exorbitant cost of parking. Visitors from Toronto are often shocked that there is free parking – and lots of it- nearly everywhere you go. If you end up having to pay for parking, the fee is typically $1.75 per hour at most. Just think: All of the fun, none of the hassle, at a fraction of the cost. These are just a few things to love about Peterborough!
