If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know there’s nowhere in the world we’d rather live than Peterborough. After returning to our hometown in 2018, we couldn’t be happier. And we are not alone in singing the praises of our favourite city.

Retirees love the affordable lifestyle and supportive community. Young professionals are eager for outstanding opportunities in education and a thriving career market. To top it all off, you can’t ask for a better place to raise a family, with so many parks, trails, and endless activities to enjoy all year long.

However, there may be one question burning in the back of your mind if you’re thinking about relocating. Is Peterborough safe? Let’s take a look at the facts.

Each Neighbourhood Is Different

According to an article in the Peterborough Examiner, Peterborough is neither the safest nor the most dangerous city in Canada. When you look at statistics, it ranks near the middle. However, like anywhere, some neighbourhoods are destined to be safer than others.

The good news is that most communities and residential areas in Peterborough are very safe. The chances of being a victim of a crime are low, especially during the day. No matter where you live, it makes sense to take some precautions to protect yourself and your property.

Locking your doors when no one is home and ensuring valuables are out of view will go a long way to helping everyone sleep soundly at night.

Peterborough’s Supportive Community

One of the things we love best about Peterborough is how tight-knit and supportive the community is. Day and night, there’s always a sense that residents are looking out for each other. The city itself offers plenty of resources to support you in any situation.

Community Care Peterborough is just one example, where seniors and those with disabilities can access care and services right in their own homes. If you have an emergency or need help, assistance is just a phone call away. Plus, services like Meals on Wheels and chair yoga help to keep everyone healthy and involved regardless of their level of ability.

Whether you need specific counselling or just a listening ear, you can access even more resources through the Peterborough Chapter of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group website.

A Network of Parks & Trails

Are you dreaming of a safe place where children can explore and play outside all day? The sheer number of walking and cycling paths and beautiful parks in Peterborough help to keep youngsters well away from cars and traffic. Even better, your family can get caught up in the beauty of nature instead of worrying about honking horns and sudden lane shifts.

Whatever neighbourhood you settle down in, chances are good that there’s a park or playground within a few minutes walking distance. Regional parks are in generous supply, and they are massive. Some are located on the beach and offer a network of year-round trails.

You’ll also find a wide selection of community parks that combine sports facilities and green spaces, where children and teenagers can spend hours shooting hoops, hiking, playing soccer, or in-line skating. No matter what activities your family enjoys, you can have the peaceful assurance that everyone is staying active and safe!

 A Reputation for Family Friendly

Access to community services and premium education is imperative to creating a safe environment, and Peterborough is well known for both. The public library alone offers endless programming options for children of all ages – and many of these events are free of charge. It’s not just for little ones, either. Teens and young adults will have the chance to get involved, as well as read and review books for the library.

Peterborough also has a superb public education system, with access to three separate school boards that serve the area: the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board, and the Conseil scolaire de district Catholique centre sud, which oversees French-language Catholic education.

A Happy and Engaged Community

In Peterborough, we believe that keeping children and teenagers engaged and occupied is one of the keys to a safe and happy community. It’s one of the reasons Peterborough hosts so many incredible events throughout the year, some one-of-a-kind, others recurring annually.

Many functions like the Peterborough Science Fair, Hiawatha First Nation Annual Pow Wow, and even the Dragon Boat Festival are designed to encourage children to learn more about the diverse and supportive community all around them. Others are all about a good time, including the highly-anticipated Peterborough Musicfest

In addition, you’ll discover many random and wonderful smaller events throughout the year that will keep everyone laughing and entertained. For example, Fun With Slime Day is back by popular demand, an experience youngsters can enjoy at Hutchison House Museum. You’ve heard that there is safety in numbers, and fun occasions like these are where children can meet lifelong friends.
